Very important decision and need answers quick, school starts next week, I am enrolled and I do have full financial aid, I have been accepted into the fall CLT program and the LPN starts in January. I need to know which is more beneficial and I do have a six month old.

  1. The answer depends upon what kinds of aptitudes and interests you have.  Are you more interested in patient care and having a direct impact on the treatment they receive or do you have an aptitude for the medical sciences and enjoy analytical and critical thinking?  Both careers provide similar benefits, opportunities, and salaries.  Salaries vary by location and setting (hospital, doctor's office, etc.); according to www.salary.com the national average for LPNs is $35K to $42K on an annual basis and $36K to $43K for MLTs.

You should be able to find positions in either fields offering flexible hours and reasonable pay.  You would probably be more fit for a career as an LPN if you can handle some higher stress and are "people oriented."  MLTs work behind the scenes, deal with moderate levels of stress and don't have to "get their hands dirty" so to speak.  I hope this helps.  I'm an ASCP certificated medical technologist and I wouldn't trade my career in very easily.

  2. Take the CLT.  Clinical Lab Techs work regular hours for the most part.  LPN's may have rotating shifts or work varying hours.
