I'm going in January of 2008, and I am just wondering if anyone knows where I could stay for cheap, aside from hostels and such, so that I could really take in the culture. People that would take me into their homes or something along those lines. I am a Canadian looking to travel and learn.

  1. The northeast is very beautiful and interesting. I´d like to recommend Fortaleza, Florianópolis, Iguaçu and Brasília. I don´t know Rio, but take a look on the pictures and you will see that it´s one of the most beautiful cities (but, unfortunatelly, it´s also dangerous). São Paulo is enormous and it remembers NY or Beijing.

  2. Think about renting an apartment. You can get them cheap in Ipanema....for the week or month. Go to Rioforpartiers.com and check out that site...I would advise buying the book as it has great insider info....and contact Bryan at Rio Charm for some more accomodations ideas....you can get his info from Cris at rioforpartiers.com

Just be sure you go to Ipanema...you will not want to leave. Once you are there - you will meet many people and can probably hook up.

  3. I know they are doing this in Rio for the Pan Games. It would be easier to help you if you knew exactly WHERE in Brazil you are going to stay. Kind of a large country...

Usually on tourist destination, like a famous (not urban) beach, it is easy to find.

Sometimes you see adds on the local newspaper..

  4. bring a tent. it will be the cheapest

  5. If in Rio try the Rio Backpackers... they are located in Copacabana, very close to the beach. The owners are two wonderfull girls that wil do anything to make your trip the best one ever. Their website is http://www.riobackpackers.com.br

    have fun

  6. You can get hotel stays really cheap.  If ur Canadian and can afford the plane ticket, housing wont be a problem.  You could contact a ranch around the Pampas that allow residents to stay.  They would advertise online if you took a look.

I assume when you say Brazilian culture, I mean past culture, not modern culture like nightclubs in Rio.

  7. its an advise not to stay at anybodies home, however there are a very cheap hotels there like 20 $ a night ,just tell me where you are going exactly and i will help you where to stay.

more over choose safe cities .......if you have no idea  where to stay i will recommend  some cities that i know well to stay there.

  8. Your best bet for cheap accommodations in Brazil would be to rent an apartment if you are going to be in any one place more than a week.  It is possible to rent a 'temporada' in most cities.  While it is possible to rent on a daily basis, it is  cheaper to rent it by the week or month.  There are agencies  that handle these rentals but it is much cheaper to deal with apartment owners.  Don't be afraid to haggle!  My second choice would be to rent a room in a private home.

Keep in mind that prices for everything skyrocket around the Christmas-New Year and Carnaval holidays.

  9. Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT travel to Brazil on your own, is that understood?

It is simply not safe and too dangerous.

Brazil is a third world country with a very poor economical infrastructure, is that clear?
