I have heard from some people that this is extremly dangerous, while others say that with the right precautions, the trip should go smoothly. I have done some research but would like some feedback. Does anyone have some experience backpacking through these countries?

  1. I think all cities and countries have their "dangeorous neighborhood" I'll recomend u no to wear a lot of jewelry and money.. Ask people what places are safe or not... frequently ...doing that ..you wont find problems...

    Good Luck

    Welcome to Peru, my friend

  2. The countries themselves are not really any more dangerous than much of Western Europe and America.  Nevertheless, especially if you are not fluent in the language, you should take precautions.

    1) Make sure someone at home knows your itinerary, hotels, etc and check in with them fairly regularly.

    2) Keep copies of your passport and other documentation either in the luggage at the hotel or with someone who could fax it to you in an emergency.

    3) Take a "global" activated cell phone.  Keep it charged.

    4) Do not flash your valuables or the fact you are traveling alone.  Avoid potentially dangerous situations such as sketchy areas of town or dimly lit streets.

    5) Consider wearing a cheap yet effective "rape whistle" should you be attacked.

If you travel smartly, remaining conscious of the potentials for danger, you will have a safe trip.  I have been to all of those countries and have had no problems, but there are bad people everywhere and you don't want to be the one they take advantage of abroad OR in your own neighborhood.  Goodluck!

  3. People who told you that this countries are dangerous, are the typical ignorants who think that USA is the safest country in the world, and the rest of the world is a jungle!

they are safe countries, especially Chile,Argentina and Brazil.

People are very european, friendly, great food, nothing spicy or weird.

Santiago and Buenos Aires are great cities, very cosmopolitan. many cultural options, great for shopping and very affordable.

I love south america, you'll have a great time, enjoy it!

  4. No. But I live in Brazil and have travelled to Argentina. You'll be OK, just be aware that you may get mugged in Brazil.
