I'm trying to find records from the early 1800's. I know this person was born there and I have the year I just don't know the town in which he was born. Is there a website I can go to that would have that kind of information?

  1. Statutory Registration in the UK commenced at different times .In England and Wales it was 1 July 1837 - in Scotland 1 January 1855 and in Ireland it was dependent on your religion ! Family Search ( the LDS site ) is a freebie  . You will find births and baptisms / Christenings for England and Wales prior to 1837 .These have been transcribed from the Parish Records and are notoriously strewn with mistakes !  Strangely enough the LDS /Family Search for Scotland although statutory registration started in 1855 the LDS records for marriages , births and baptisms /  Christenings go up until 1876 .

  2. one location to try is

    www.familysearch.org

They have tons of birth records for England, which are best if you look to see if it is AN EXTRACTED record (meaning..copied from the register itself).

Another route is post the name and approx date, and one of our resident UK experts will see what they can find for you.

Actually, there are tons of sites online that could have the info, but these are quick.

  3. UK answer.

Civil registration didn't start here in the UK until 1st July 1837, so any birth prior to that  wouldn't actually be registered. If the person was baptised then there is a possibility it would be recorded in the Parish registers for the church where the baptism took place. The actual birth date wouldn't have been recorded but the date of the baptism and the parents name would be on there.

    Hope this helps.

You could buy a pay per view voucher for www.ancestry.co.uk as they have the Pallot's baptism register, or if you would like to give a name and year for the person I would be happy to do the search for you.

  4. Pallot's Baptism Index once included 12 million entries, but it was mostly destroyed in the Second World War, so that only 200,000 entries remain. It covered 1780-1840 for at least 22 London and Middlesex parishes, it is obviously now incomplete.

Your best bet, without doubt, is to search the records, free, at

    http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Home/Wel...

Just be certain that any record you find has been transcribed from the original register and is not one that has been "contributed".

  5. For before 1837 try www.familysearch.org and search the International Genealogical Index. If it's after 1837 then try www.freebmd.org.uk

You could also try searching the censuses at www.ancestry.co.uk although only the 1881 census is free.

  6. Hi Joey,

The best place I know for that type of information is ancestry.com, which is a paid subscription site.  If you'd like to post the person's name and year of birth, and perhaps the area in which he was born (if you know where the family lived), there are several of us who subscribe and we'd be happy to help you look for it.

  7. I search www.familysearch.org for this type of record as they have a lot of different country's information stored.

My favorite is www.ancestry.com so you might try to see what you can get for free, which I think would be search results but you can't see the records.  They also offer a 14 day free trial period.

    Good Luck!
