I have a Brother multicenter w/fax that I've plug into a phone jack in my room but it's not working. Do I need to have a seperate line for faxing from my local phone company? What am I doing wrong?

  1. You need to plug in the power cord too, silly.

  2. Did you pay the phone bill?

  3. You should have software and/or a driver. The driver would install another "printer". You use a word document program, type what you want, and then go to Page Setup or Printer Setup within the word software, and select the Fax Printer.

The fax software that is standalone is usually pretty funky, but what you have to use to receive incoming faxes. Maybe the Brother multicenter is also comes with a scanning software, and once, again, you'd go to print, after scanning, to fax. You only need a separate land line if you want to leave your computer on as a fax machine all day, ready to receive. Callers will hear a high-pitched beep between rings when they call your fax.

  4. make sure you hear a dial tune then dial the number and hit send.

  5. You don't need a seperate line, just a phone line and a power source.  Try faxing a different number, I know my mom's fax doesn't like my fax machine, hers is a fax only machine, mine is a fax/printer/answer machine etc.  Sometimes they are picky.

  6. No you do not need separate line.

Check to see that the fax is connected via the line to the phone jack...be sure both jacks are in properly.

Is the fax set to fax?

    Is it on?

    Is there error code?

Is your phone service non working at  present?

Check for dial tone with phone.

Be sure that you have connected the fax to the phone jack and removed connection between phone and phone jack until the end of the fax...
