I'm trying to find a quote from an economist about how earning but not spending creates value for others.?

The point of the quote is, if someone earns but not spends, they are creating goods or services for others but not claiming any for themselves. The economist thinks this is a very beneficial form of altruism. The writer is an economist, and I may have com across the quote in Freakonomics, but I can't remember for sure.
