Which cables does he need to connect the Upconversion DVD player to his regular TV (so HDMI-to-what-type?)

  1. Assuming the 50" "regular" TV is actually an HDTV, then he will need an HDMI (digital) to component (analog) converter.

See the link for one such item ... the only one I know of.

It should be noted that it is HDCP compliant which means that if HDCP is active (probably not for a couple of years -- enough time to upgrade the TV later ... see the 2nd link for info) the analog output will be turned off. I'd suggest e-mailing the company if you have questions.

  2. The only HDMI conversion cable I know of is from HDMI to DVI. If your friend has an older TV, It may not have A DVI connector, it may just have RCA (red, White, and Yellow) cables or at best the component (red, Green & Blue) cables. If all he has is the RCA or the Component cables, then the DVD player would have to be connected with the same colored type cables. I do not know of a HDMI to RCA or Component converter.

  3. if the tv is old it probly dont have hdmi inputs. it might not even be an HDTV. in that case theres no point in using in upconvert player or a hi def cable. if it is an HDTV w/ hdmi inputs then use hdmi, hdmi only come HDMI-to-HDMI.... if this isnt the case, use component video (red, blue, green) cable. if choose this you will also need audio cables. either left-white, red-right stero cable, or digital, whatever is compatible w/ ur tv and dvd player
