I'm trying to locate a particular type of German shepherd for our family. ?

I would like one that is the full-coated with a body that is not too lean... I saw a huge beautiful black/tan with a full shaggy coat that was absolutely a big baby... that is what we're wanting for our small farm. Does this breed have a particular name? I have seen German Sheperds that are lean and smoother but I want a more full coated kind. Anybody have any suggestions?

Go to www.petfinder.com and look at the hundreds of shepherds and mixes that need a home and I'll bet you find the type you are looking for.  Good luck.

Nope, same breed. Its just that the leaner kind is what you get when you mate the German Line with the American line of German Shepherds. You`ll just have to look around. Good luck!

you did not say if you were in UK or US

  if US maybe you saw a SHILOH SHEPERD,,these are bred to the standard of the older GSD and are bigger than the GSD more widely bred, and in US

Are you talking about the long-coat german shepherd?  I used to have a black one!

I think you are describing the "King Shepherds."

I personally don't think they are a great specimen of the breed to be honest, but here are some sites if you are interested.

I would strongly suggest that you either look into rescue, or if you want a good working dog from a breeder, to research some reputable breeders of the standard GSD. Just my own opinion though. I grew up with them and think they are wonderful dogs who didn't need to be super sized =)

There is only one German Shepherd Dog.

There are plenty of GSD mixes too that would look like the one you saw.

You might have seen a Belgian Tervuren. They look very much like a German Shepherd in coloring but have a shaggy coat.
