  1. Rather than starting with what material to use, first think about what you're trying to do with your lungs model.  What aspect do you want to show about lungs?  

    For instance, you could try for a "working" model that shows how the diaphram moving up and down causes lungs to fill / expell air.

    Or, you could have a 3D model that illustrates the complicated internal structure -- branching networks of passageways and sacs (bronchea, broncheoli, alveoli, etc), and maybe how this gets coupled into the blood stream.

    So ... first ask yourself what you want to do with your model.

    NEXT decide on materials.  In the first case, a soda bottle and balloon would work (see attached).  In the second case, maybe clay, or tubing from the hardware store (different sizes) and perhaps small bits of sponge. You could also use pipe cleaners, or fine electrical wire for capillaries, etc.


  2. you might try a coarse foam rubber in a clear plastic bag.
