I'm been playing baseball since highschool and play pretty frequently now.... but I'm trying to pick up golf. I'm having swinging mechanics issues because I'm using my baseball swing when I'm driving the golf balls and it always ends up with a SEVERE right hand slice... help?!?

  1. I myself was a baseball player and for many years experienced this same problem that you are now facing. To correct the problem it was explained to me in another baseball term. Think of the ball as sitting on second base, Now take your backswing over the shortstop and swing over to the second baseman, It may take some practice but eventually this inside plane swing will result in a nice draw.

  2. This worked for me so I'll recommend it to you. I'm a novice golfer with a handicap of 28. I'm self taught, I never got any lessons. If it's concerning your driver, here's the tip: You may be standing too far away from the ball, which means the outside part of the face is striking the ball, guaranteeing a slice. Or you are teeing the ball up too high, which could lead to a slice. One more thing regarding driving, check the position of your right hand. You probably want to have it more turned in on your tee shots. So, in summary try this: Stand up straight (no knees bent), hold your driver like you are getting ready, the center of where your club is at on the ground is where you want to set the ball. Tee the ball low (maybe a half inch). Check your right hand and make sure it's turned in a little more than usual. Depending on how bad your slice is, you may want to turn in your club face (to the left) just a tad. Give it a smooth swing and if you've followed everything you should get a nice laser drive. Again this is what works for me. I can consistently drive the ball straight, but the rest of the game is what kills me. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

  3. A drill in one of my golf magazines this month is to swing the club with a baseball swing.  I also was a baseball player and this works for me.  Make sure the toe of the club is pointing straight up at the midway point of the swing and release the club(or roll your wrists).  Make this swing until it feels comfortable and the bend at the hips until the club brushes the grass and repeat the swing. Try this it will help.

  4. lessons are the best idea if you're just learning... they'll get the old habbits out.

If you dont want to spend the money here are a few tips.

Keep the back elbow in and down (close to the body).  Put a towel under your arm pit and dont drop it during the swing.

Make sure the head of the club starts on the inside of the ball and go through the ball to the outside (not to much or you will hook the ball).

What I did to fix mine in this is I would put the logo of the ball facing me (close to me) aim at that and when trying to hit that I would try to aim it out to the far right (I am right handed)  That is inside to outside swing.

    Good luck... get lessons.

  5. I played baseball and softball for 32 straight summers and I had troubles when I started golfing.  Took a couple of lessons and it really helped.  The first time I swung the club for the instructor, me could immediately tell I was a baseball player.

In my opinion, lessons are the way to go.  It's been a few years since I took lessons, but it really helped me understand the golf swing.  As a matter of fact, I'm taking a couple of lessons this spring just for a refresher.

  6. Repeat your golf swing very slowly again and again and eventually it will come good. The slice is probably caused by your not adressing the ball right. Good luck

  7. u need to practise in the training field where the trainer w'd teach u about the tee-off basic training.off course u've to pay him a lump-sum of money.

  8. A slice happens when your swing path is 'over the top' of the ball with an open club face. This means yours club is traveling on an outside to inside plane, and your clubface is not getting square to the impact position.

    Corrections

    1) Make sure you attack the ball from the inside.

    2) Strengthen your grip (makes the V's go to your right shoulder)

    3) Make sure all your weight ends up on your left side when your swing is finished

  9. Try to swing "as soft as you can".  Take a look at Annika Sorenstans swing, she looks like she's barely swinging at all.  You could also try closing the face of the club a little.

  10. There are lots of problems that cause a slice you just have to get an instructor and have him help fix your slice.   I figured mine was because I was teeing up to far inside the ball, I started moving the club farther out and my slice started to decrease.
