I'm trying to run a 7 minute mile, what is the best way to get to that point?

I can make it to the track every day, and am currently running an 8 minute 30 second mile. I'm having trouble shaving any time from that. What I try to do now is run an 8 minute mile every time I go to the track, and run at that pace as far as possible before I can go no further. Right now I'm going just under 3/4 of a mile when I do that. I'm not seeing improvement quickly, and I'm concerned I'm not running far enough or long enough to get a real workout to improve from.

  1. You never test yourself everyday, that tears you body down, even though you arent in good condition.

    forget about timing yourself

just get out there and run everyday 2-4miles a day and in two weeks you'll be innoticeably  better condition

  2. If you want to shave off that extra time from the mile, you'll need to do some distance running.  Sorta like XC, but you're just training for the mile.  Since I'm assuming you are a new runner, start out for about 20-25 minutes a day, 5 days a week, at a steady pace for a week or two, then bump it up to 25-30 minutes, and then 30-35 minutes.

How fast can you run a quarter mile in (one lap)?  If you can run it in 1:45 or less, then you know that you have the speed, you just need to build some endurance.

You should start to see some real improvement after a month, but it depends on how you dedicate yourself if you will reach your goal or not.  I'm guessing anywhere from 8 to 16 weeks.

  3. First of all to get a work out you definantly don't need to run mile after mile after mile 1 mile a day can still keep you healthy and in shape. Your problem is that you start off running at a pace you cannot keep consistant I would recommend you bring a stopwatch and try to run each lap around a similar pace once you get to a point were you can do that make your pace each lap a little bit faster until you reach your goal. I also reccomend a running partner(somone who is faster) they can push you to keep up and that will help your time.

  4. 8:30 is snail-slow, like a walking pace. Move your feet faster.

  5. JUST GET SOMETHING THATS GONNA MOTIVATED YOU DURING THE RACE.

IT WONT MATTER HOW FAST OR SLOW YOU ARE ITS GONNA HELP YOU. YOU ARE GOING TO RUN ALOT FASTER THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE.

  6. while running your mile, try running tempo pace, or race pace. instead of settling into your comfort zone , dont be afraid to just go. try doing 800m workouts, [improve your 1/2 mile pace then move on to 1600m ] which is a mile.

my time is 6:42. i am 14 years old, i am trying to break 6:40

=] that is what i do to get faster miles.

    good luck !

p.s, you will break 8min in no time !!

  7. Go on a treadmill, and try to keep a constant pace of about 9.5 mph, if you want to try to get you goal done asap, although treadmills are not 100% accurate. if you want to gradually work up to that time, run for25-30 mins. a day, while doing intervals of sprints, and light jogging. this should help you get to your 7 minutes in no time. you really have to push yourself.
