  1. i don't think one is supposed to, but there are people who live in NYC and register their cars in Vermont. try it and see what happens.

You can do it, but you're likely to get caught, at which point you'll lose your coverage and may have problems getting it back again.  If you're in an accident the first question your insurance company is going to ask is why you're registered upstate but driving in New York.  And if the address on your insurance and the address of where you're actually living don't match, you could be in trouble with the police.

    If your home address is honestly in upstate, and you're only in NYC for brief periods on business and pleasure, go ahead.  If you are actually living in NYC--you have an apartment in the city and hold down a job there--it's much better to be honest.

    Look at it this way:  If what you're thinking about doing was easy, wouldn't virtually everyone do it?  (They don't).
