Question:

I'm trying to search a motorcycle vin#, and everywhere I search says it is an 'incorrect vin number'.

The vin I'm using has 17 characters and follows all the other guidelines, so I am stumped. Do motorcycle vins not show up as cars do? It is 2006 Honda CBR1000.

  1. Get the vin and then call your local police for a theft or salvage check.

  2. Have you tried this decoder? It appears to be Honda motorcycle specific.

    EDIT:

    Thanks for the follow-up.

I guess I am wondering where you are typing in the VIN. CARFAX doesn't maintain accident history and such information for motorcycles. You can call your state police, or the state police of the state it was previously registered in, and ask them to search for accident records or police reports concerning the VIN.

If you can examine the motorcycle, you can check a few places for indications that the bike has been dropped. The ends of the handlebars, rear view mirrors, turn signals, and rider foot pegs are the parts closest to the edges of the bike that will hit the ground first.

  3. I think you have to specifically say that it is a motorcycle. I know most websites only recognize car VINs.
