  1. CRT and rear projection are large "projection" monitors where the images are actually projected onto the screen. this compared to a flat screen LCD or plasma where there is no "projection"

  2. a CRT Tv is one of those older tv's that has a large back and a screen made of glass, rear projection is basically the same

  3. CRT is cathode ray tube.  A traditional CRT TV is the  thicker, heavier, smaller TV that's been around "forever". DLP and rear projection sets can be large (73" or so) and are good rivals for plasma and large LCDs because of that.

Their advantages are that they are cheaper although thicker (about 12" deep or more) than LCD or plasma. They will take up more space in your room and aren't hung on the wall. They don't experience burn in or dead pixels and they always display fast motion without blurring however. The other advantage for a DYI type is that the most common problem that can occur with them is with the lamp inside and that is something you can repair yourself. (but the lamp may cost $200)

(later this year Mitsubishi is supposed to put a laser based model of these on the market that will eliminate the lamp, provide an even better picture, and use very little power...)
