  1. First, you need to feel, sense the age of the piece through sight, touch, if metal.  Scour the 2nd hand shops, garage sales, yard sales, flea markets. Have you been to auctions?  Go there.  Do you have an eye for the aesthetic? Search for those pieces, the uinique, the unusual, the rare, especially the rare.  You must adept your eye to antique pieces to keep on the lookout for.  Search in some museum website.  Look at pictures of differing items. Choose your material.  Narrow a search to the MANY things you identify. Once an antique is identified and the communal "aye" is sounded and the piece documented, registered etc.., it becomes dear in price. Therefore, you find the piece in places strewn, forgotten, lying in dust, no one knowing their age, origin but you sensing a piece from times ago.  Buy it.  Buy anything that required manual work to produce as there are no longer the craftsmen there were in the past.  This dying art / handiwork will give value to whatever piece you purchase in future. Look for the aesthetic and that is lasting in value.

    Regards

  2. You should look online at different local estate sales.  My aunt goes around to these different houses and picks up antiques. She usually sells them on ebay.

  3. Search website for each paticular item, (old bottle collectors, wwll collectors, etc.) To find collectibles go to resale shops, "junk" shops, yard sales.  Don't pass up a place because it looks "junky' because sometimes you find the best and cheapest "goodies" there!

  4. 1.To be frank. My  idea of an antiques collection goes somewhat

farther back in time than coke, clorox or a WW II helmet.

2.Based on my experience as a collector I have rarely found,

unfortunately, cheap antique things. And when they were cheap, they had scarce ,or no real interest.

3.What type of antiques do you intend to collect ?

    Ramon Saenz de Heredia

  5. WWII helmet:   www.iberkshires.com  Darrell English

Sorry, haven't learned how to do links yet.

He's been collecting for 43 years.

Online, I don't know unless you want to become part of a forum, but Darrell gets most of his reference books at Barnes & Noble.  A few specific titles come from Bender Publishing.  And Schiffer.

As for cheap antique items,  what do you like?  What's your budget because some things AREN'T cheap.  Check out yard/tag sales.  Collect what you like is the best thing you can do.  Check out auctions, estate sales, and antique shops.

    Good luck!!!!
