Question:

I'm trying to think of a way to put hooks above the center of our indoor pool to hang lights. Any suggestions?

The pool needs light badly. It's fine before sunset, but after dark it just needs more light. It would be best if I could hang globe-looking lights from hooks above the pool. Unfortunately there isn't much room to work on either side of the pool, and I can't think of a way to get up to the ceiling directly above the pool to make the necessary holes. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

  1. googa,

    try this:

    http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=pool0c-20&o...

its a multi colored light thats inexpensive, easy to install, and most importantly, looks awesome.

im sure your guests/children would get a kick out of the light show.

  2. I have had to paint over a few of these pols like this, being a semi retired paint contractor..We have taken two extension ladders and extend then lay across the top of the pool(on the floor, or sides of the pools) and then lay a piece of plywood across the two ladders to where we could then set up a step ladder on the sheet of plywood..They do make lights for pools that float and run off of batteries as well..They have adjustable colored patterns that you can select for like  a Disco pattern(too harsh for me)m then a subtle pattern that will change colors slowly , nice and easy..as well as a strobe pattern..We have 3 in our little pool for it is outside and a cheap above ground pool..we cool off alot at night and use them then....This is something I havent seen here are some floating jelly fish pool lights..I will post the link along with a couple other styles..

  3. Hi Would get some old nickel wire and string it across the pool near the top of the wall. Nickel will not rust and it's fairly strong. Then I would rap your additional lights on to it.

  4. Well, I really don't like the idea of 'hanging' a light over the pool itself... what if it falls?

The easiest thing to do, would be to install track lighting around the perimeter.  Then you could 'aim' the lights where you want them.

If however, you want lights directly over the pool, then do not 'hang' them on hooks.... attach them securely to boxes attached to the rafter studs.  As to how to get out over the pool, that's easy... build a 'bridge'.  Takes a bit of carpentry work, but it can be done.  Ive done smaller versions to work over water beds I couldnt move, when I needed to work on a homeowner's ceiling.

It would take two or three floor joists, or trusses, that would span the width of the pool, and some good 3/4 inch plywood.  You could build seperate stands to support it, at the height you'd need to just reach the ceiling, while standing on it.  (I'd cover the pool, by the way, while working above, so as not to drop any tools or debris, into it.)

It would be possible to even turn this into a long bench which could be placed at the wall for later use.

If the pool is over 12ft wide, I would seriously consider using floor trusses, because of their greater strength over the span.

    Have Fun
