  1. This is tough. I work for a company that does estate sales, and you cannot believe how much junk people accumulate.  I was a packrat til I got this job.  Start in one room, and it really helps if you have a friend who is not attached to your stuff like you are to help.  Make 3 piles as you go: keep, throw away, and garage sale.  BE RUTHLESS.  If you have not used something in 6 months, get rid of it.  Don't just go through "the big stuff."  Open drawers, clean out closets, get it all.  It is okay to cry before you let something go. Then put away what you are keeping, take the trash to the dump, and have a big garage sale for the rest.  You might be surprised how much you can make from things you do not need anymore. This will be a big job the first time you do it, but every 3 months or so go back through and weed things out and it won't take as long.  You might adopt a "one in, one out" policy also.  For example, if you buy a new set of sheets, get rid of an old set. Works for clothing, tools, and anything else also.

  2. I know I am like that too!

My friend and I read about feng shui last year and part of it was decluttering.  Now I try to keep very few things out and keep them in harmony with the room.

It is hard with 3 teenagers and a husband but I think I am getting through to them.

I also think about how much it would cost to replace something if need it 3 or 4 months or years from now.  We would save pieces of cloth or wood left over from project.  No we toss things out (or recycle if possible).  There are very few things I have regretted getting rid of.

It all bout finding what you really need and what you can feel comfortable with parting with.
