I have a red, black and white wires coming in from the ceiling. In the light/fan I have: A blue wire and a white wire coming from the light plug recepticle and a Black, green and white wire coming from the fan plug recepticle. There is also a copper ground wire coming from the ceiling which is grounded. How should these color combinations work? I've tried a few different combinations and one switch works the othere switch causes the breaker to trip.

  1. This should be fairly simple.  All of the white wires go together.  Green wire from the fan to the bare copper wire from the switch.

The blue wire from the fixture connects to either the red or black wire from the ceiling, the black wire from the fixture connects to the other of the red or black from the ceiling.

Without inspecting the switch, impossible to tell for certain which is which.  If you get them reversed, the wrong switch will operate the fan and light, no other harm done.  If this happens, simply change the combination of the red/black from the ceiling and black/blue from the fixture.

  2. The copper and green wires are ground and should be connected together.

The white wires should be the neutral return wires, they can be spliced together.

The red and black wires in the ceiling should be the hot wires.

The blue wire should go to red/black wires from the ceiling.

Depending on the age of the house and the last rewiring job, these should be correct.

Only bare copper wire or green coated wire should be used for ground, white is for neutral return and red or black is used for the hot wires although any color other than those for ground and neutral can be used.

Make sure you are connecting the light to the light switch and the fan to the fan switch.

If you continue to have problems, you should talk to an electrician.
