...when I attach it to my email, it doesn't seem to be compressed at all. The email just 'hangs' because the file is too large (about 3.3MB). Any suggestions? Thanks

most AVI files are already compressed by the software that produced them. any further compression is almost impossible.

so, it would be a good idea to upload your file to a public storage server (like rapidshare) and send the link (and the password, if you used it to compress the file) to your correspondent.
