I'm unable to watch my movies from my laptop on my HDTV, any help please?

I connected my laptop to my TV with a S-Video cable & I get to see my desktop on my TV, but nothing else happens, no mouse, no movie...what else do i need to do? Do i need another cable like HDMI or something?

it might be like a side-screen, drag it over to the tv.

Sounds like something just isn't compatible.  I'd bet (but I won't swear to it) that you need a SVGA cable.  I don't think S-video will accomplish what you want.
