I'm using an RF mod to connect my tv to my vcr/dvd combo. It plays videos but I can't record and then play.

I can play pre-recorded videos fine, but when I try to record anything I can't play it. My vcr continues to play but it seems that my modular shuts off and won't play my video.

I suspect that you aren't recording anything on the tapes.  If you put them in another VCR to play on another TV, are they actually good tapes?  I suspect that there is nothing on them.

Make sure that you have the antenna/cable feed going into the VCR/DVD combo, so that the VCR actually has something it can record, and then from the VCR/DVD to the TV.  That's the only way it can work.
