Question:

I'm using my son's 1st B'day as an excuse to do something special (just baby-mom-dad). What cake can he eat?

I asked this before, and people shot me with "Babies don't understand a thing!" and "What's so special about birthday?"

Now, before you pile up the same trash, please read carefully.

After an exhausting year of juggling work-home-baby, I really want to do something special for the three of us.

I don't care whether he would remember it or not. Like if I die before he's old enough to remember me, well, at least he can look at his first birthday pictures...

And I want to make some kind of a simple birthday cake that not only look nice, but also edible by the birthday boy. I'm thinking of something that can be shaped like the number 1 (one).

NO, I will not buy cakes from a shop, because I really want to make one. And I would never do this any other day.

(I mean hey, even in the pet section, people are making birthday cake for their dogs... I bet these dogs UNDERSTAND their birthday very well)

There won't be anyone else but the three of us, lol, so don't bother about clowns and kids' activities. I also happen to hate clowns, btw.

Like I said, I just want to do something special for my little family.

And a baby's birthday is a good excuse.

And if you have a problem with that, please don't bother answering.

Thanks.

  1. Take him to an indoor play centre or a zoo and take loads of photos. If it's still warm enough have a little picnic. We used to do this with our daughter when she was 1. As for the cake, just keep it simple, a nice plain sponge with loads of icing. Well, you're only 1 once, spoil him. Babies do kind of understand that it's a special day for them if you make them feel that way.

  2. I personally like cupcakes at kids birthdays....just give him one and let him go to town.

  3. Wow, i don't know what bitter people answered your question before, But I completely agree with you.

It's something you can feel special about & take pic's of his first B-day and share it with him when he's older, that'll make him feel special too.

Your b-day cake idea is cute, but if he likes a certain show you can try baking a cake into his fav. animal, toy, or show.

    Have fun. !!

  4. i cant believe people would have a problem with this, i think its a great idea.

You baby can eat whatever cake you want to make him..its entirely up to you what you want to do with it as far as shape, theme etc.

My daughter was scared of her 1st birthday cake, she cried and screamed, when we brought it out with candles on it, so we took the candles off and she still was freaking, she wouldnt even take a bite. oh well. have fun with whatever you do...the pictures will be good for him to look back onto,

  5. Oh please think about doing this!  It literally saved my insanity after going back to work (teaching high school) just before final exams and having to clean out a classroom I'd spent 8 years in (I quit!)

Get on Priceline and search your area or the nearest metropolitan area for a 3 star hotel.  Put in about half what Priceline's going rate is for it and chances are you'll get it!  Go spend the weekend (again, who cares if it's not THE day) or at least one solid day/night (check in as earlier as possible, stay as late as possible) and do dinner at the hotel's (surely overpriced) restaurant, including having them bring out YOUR  and your hubby's favorite dessert with a "1" -shaped candle on it (brought by you).  Take a ton of pictures of the Birthday Boy and then enjoy the dessert yourselves.

I totally appreciate your desire to want to do something special and homemade for the big day, and there are cake tins in the shapes of numbers at Michael's, Hobby Lobby, etc., but I think a weekend away from DAILY LIFE would be a great way to remember your son's birthday and it would be a great mental break for mom and dad too.

Yes, it takes some preparation before hand to get everything together, but chances are, you've got everything you need to make it work, and I swear, you will not regret it!  We literally went 20 miles from home and it felt like 2000.  Our baby swam in the pool (in her floatie) and we just layed around all weekend (love room/maid service!)  DOn't forget this birthday is a celebration that YOU survived your first year as PARENTS too!  Congratulations and good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  6. My daughter just turned one and everyone told me that same c**p....she is too little to know what a birthday is. Well she might be to litttle but who cares this is my first baby's first birthday. Even if the child will not remember it you as a mom will.  As a mom we all want the best for our children. So what, if spending a few extra dollars makes you and your son happy then thats the way it should be. This is his and your day so please dont let anyone take it away from you.

    HAPPY 1ST B-DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!...

  7. See links for a recipe I just scanned from one of my sister's cake books. She made this cake for her son's naming ceremony when he had just turned a year old.

For my son's 1st birthday he had a cake in the shape of a '1' specially made from a shop.

  8. Do you have a hobby lobby in your area?  I saw a great cake mold in the shape of a "1" just the other day in the birthday isle.  He can eat any kind of cake.  does he like strawberries?  you could make a layered cake w/ strawberries in the middle...it would be a yummy suprise!

  9. He can eat any kind of cake, what I find cute, for babies 1st birthdays, is when you make him his own small special cake, and then put it on the high chair and let him dig in and go crazy, take LOTS of pictures too because it's so adorable and really memorable.  You can make whatever flavor you like, I dig the Funfetti cakes, they are colorful and taste really good...  I'm sure your baby will love all the pretty colors in the cake.  They have a matching frosting as well.  You can get a cake pan in almost any shape at the dollar store, or the grocery store even has them.

    Good luck and have fun...
