I'm wanting to write a story about the supernatural...?

I want to write a story about the supernatural, possibly vampires or some other such mythical creature, and I was wondering if there is some kind of book that I should read for some general mythological background information. I want to be aware of certain established ideas, such as the fact that some evil beings do not like to cross running water, but I don't know where to find a book full of this kind of information.

I would say the internet! One website or one book wouldn't give you the information your wanting. In addition, when your writing a piece you need to have different points of view and a lot of research. A website could have misleading information. I would look through different books and websites and find the common denominator in all of them. For example, when you want someones opinion on how your tie or dress looks, and you don't like their option... would you go to someone else for their opinion too?

Wikipedia is a very good place to get answers for this knd of ting. I know teachers all say not to use it cause it can be written by any one but it still has a lot of good info.
