One of the requirements of the K1 visa is that the petitioning US citizen has adequate financial resources to support the intending immigrant, or they have another willing US citizen who can act as a co sponsor for the intending immigrant. It's purely based on income or liquidity value of assets, personal debt is not an issue.


  2. Sort of. Part of the process is sponsoring your fiancee, which involves proving financial support. The base requirement is that the sponsor makes more than 1.5x the federal poverty level, which puts the requirement right now at about $19,000, and has to prove financial stability (I had to acquire a verification of employment and earnings statement from where I work).

    They also consider things like how much life insurance you have, how much money you have in the bank, etc. You can look at the I-134 to see what they use to decide whether you can financially support someone on a k1 visa.
