Question:

I'm worried about my mom? ?

I'm half German, half French, my mom is German and vice versa. So my mom took me and my brother to Germany and we stayed with relatives. She was happy to be there. We left a few months later to return to the U.S. Before we left, she said she was homesick (U.S.) and was glad to return home.

So now we're back home, but now my mom seems depressed! Doing all the American traditions (eating fast-food, not communicating, etc.) seem to make her even more sad. And I'm worried, I know she misses her home country, she was even crying about it once or twice. And I'm scared she will move back... and if she doesn't it seems to be tearing her apart. It worries me and makes me really sad, what do I do? ;(

  1. If your mom moves back go with her with your brother and your father. It's better to be with family and relatives then by yourself.

  2. She's now home-sick for her real home.  Be patient with her.  Time will heal this, but she just needs love and assurance that she in the correct place.

A creative, fun idea would be to surprise her with a 'German' night.  Perhaps your brother and father could help you.  Find a German recipe, for both dinner and dessert.  Find German decorations (you can possibly find home-made decoration ideas online) and set them up in your house one day when she is gone.  Find German music she likes and have it playing in the background.  When she comes in the door, shout out Welcome Home in German.  Speak to her in German, if you are fluent.  Treat her to a German feast.

This will make her feel more at home, but at home, if you know what I mean.  She's with her family, back in the US, but for that night, back in Germany, partying with her family.

Good luck but just be gentle and nice right now.

  3. maybe you should talk to her about it. she may just be bottling all the feelings up and wants to get them out. it may help. or try spending time with her as you said not communicating. good luck!
