I'm writing a fantasy novel - Is this setting too much like Final Fantasy?

I know of a video game called Final fantasy, and from the pictures I've seen, it seems like a mix of fantasy and science fiction. They use technology but still have swords and all that. Am I right?

Now, I've been writing a fantasy, and in it they do use technology such as computers, devices to communicate over long distances (phones), automobiles, flashlights, etc. So basically they use electricity and have computers, but they also use swords and all that. It is also much different from this world. One thing that makes it very different from star wars is that they do not go into space. There is barely any mention of it. Is this a lot like final fantasy?

  1. From what you are describing I think it does remind me of Final Fantasy, but it's all in how you write it. Even Final Fantasy games take elements from other fantasy games and novels in it. It's not about the elements (cars, guns, swords, cell phones, magic) that you use, it's about how you write the story that will make it unique and original.

There is nothing wrong with taking inspiration from other fantasy worlds like the one in the LOTR's series or Legend of Zelda games either (as thoose worlds are more standard for old school fantasy worlds), just as long as you don't copy stuff word for word or take direct pot shots at them (plagerism) during your writing. Make sure your characters and the story surronding them come from you, not from video games or books currently on the market.

  2. Terry Brooks had that. He took technology (though not phones and planes and such....machines though like computers and such) and mixed it with medieval times. It takes place when the world restarted after The Great Wars after everyone disappeared off of earth.

  3. no, dont worry about it. it sounds completely different. if it doesnt mention space alot.. then it isnt something you should be comparing. final fantasy is involved with aliens and diseases and rivals and stuff. so yeah.. no comparison from what im hearing :]
