I am using windows vista. I just want to do some casual indoors recording and load the video onto my pc.

I want a camcorder that will allow lengthy recording..not no 30 mins.

I have a budget between $200 - $400 for the camcorder.

Whats a good one to buy?

  1. ok the hard drive is definetly better but if you wait there will be a hard drive and mini dv camera coming out in the summer but the budget is sort of low i would spend maybe 600

  2. i disagree with the previous answer.

i believe that mini dv is a better option as it offers better resolution, cheaper archiving and less likelihood of breaking down.

mini dv are far cheaper too so you can spend the same money on a mini dv cam with more features (such as 3ccd and widescreen) than a HDD option of the same price.

    hope it helps!

I have been using video Camcorder from Hi-8, Digital 8, MiniDV, miniDVD and recently a HDD.

And additional information that could help you decide is that HDD camcorder are using a compression method to store your footage and some video details are lost.

But a HDD camcorder will able to record a LONG time. Some will able to record up to 21hours of video (but the battery wont last that long).... So you need to change batteries...

Another consideration, a miniDV tape to transfer to PC might take longer time than a HDD camcoder. From experience if your MiniDV tape is 1 hour long of footage, you need the same amount of time to transfer it to your PC. While is your HDD camcorder, 1 hour long footage will take slightly shorter time to transfer to PC.

A miniDV camcorder will require a IEEE-1394 (of Firewire) port to your PC while an HDD camcorder will only require an ordinary USB port.

A Mini DV tape will if kept on a long period of time will be infected with fungus.

HDD camcorder when travelling will create a new problem when your camcorder ran out of space as you need to copy the video footage into another PC first and delete the camcorder hard disc. A miniDV just require you to purchase a new tape.

I hope these additional information will help you decide your camcorder purchase.

Go for a camcoder that give you the best technical service. I have a bad experience buying a 'GOOD' camera with a good rating in a review, but when I have problem with the camcorder, I have difficulties in getting the necessary support and service.

    Best regards.
