I've just been prescribed prozac for my depression and I'm really exited that this might work but then I've read that some side effects can lead to more serious depression, really bad suicidal thoughts and attempts and everything like that, I'm really worried that i'll end up being worse. HELP!

  1. As long as you know what to look for as far as any worsening of your depression goes, you'll be fine.  Prozac (fluoxetine) is a very effective antidepressant.  The reason for the serious warnings is that a few people did experience worsening of their depression (including suicidal thoughts) on Prozac and other drugs like it, and so to be safe, the FDA mandated that all SSRI-type antidepressants carry the warnings so that people would know what to look for.

It may take weeks for you to start feeling less depressed.  Hang in there!  Depression is rough and it takes time for the medicine to "balance out" your brain chemistry.  However, keep taking your meds and it will get better.

If you have any concerns after taking the Prozac, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Your positive attitude and being excited about getting help are putting you on the right track to getting better!

Good luck on a happy, healthy life!  I hope this helps!

  2. Any concerns should be relayed to your doctor, not to a bunch of unknown people who can give you incorrect answers. Ask your doctor if you are worried.

  3. Your doctor wouldn't have prescribed medicine to you that they didn't feel would help. If you take it and notice yourself getting worse, go to the doctor and let them know. They'll give you a different medicine to help you.

  4. Basically, throw the prescription in the toilet and get this program instead: http://www.stresscenter.com . After doing that, then see what it is you might need.
