I've a UK tourist visa,valid for 5 years.How long can I stay at a stretch in UK b4 I have to go back to India?

I'm from India and have been told that I can only stay here 6 months at one go on a tourist visa (even thought the visa is for 5 years) and then have to go back, afterwhich I can return again?? Is this true???

As long as the visa states.

Don't overstay - in our office 2 girls were taken by immigration & deported for overstaying their tourist visas.  They are not allowed back in the UK.
