..but I have no idea where the perfect vacation spot would be. I would like to stay somewhere not too overly populated - somewhere with GORGEOUS scenery, dog sledding, and decent nightlife (good food, drink). Any suggestions?

Also - what winter month is ideal for visiting Alaska?

  1. I went to Alaska for a week in Feb. 2005- was in Anchorage, but drove to Seward , Girdwood, and a few other places. I live in Indiana and thought that it was pretty decent weather for that time of year. My next trip (hopefully next year) will be to Fairbanks, but for some reason, I'd really like to visit Bethel. The scenery was awesome! And Indian River Meats had peacocks! Who would have guessed peacocks in Alaska in February!

  2. Alaska is the best place for all the winter the dog sledding me and my boyfriend are actually might move there. I am a huge fan of the iditarod.

If you go to alaska tell you the truth you would want to go again or more likely you would want to move there.

I read online that anchorage has 575 people livein there. It is a very quite place.

you might wanna bring you camrea during the winter if you head to nome or fairbanks you might see the northern lights.

    go to this website

    www.alaska.org

see all the things and adventures you can do there.

    hope this helps

  3. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, usually just called the "Iditarod", is an annual sled dog race in Alaska. The race starts the first Saturday in "March", at the first checkpoint on Fourth Avenue, in downtown "Anchorage".

"Fur Rendezvous" is a winter celebration of Alaska's fur trapping and trading heritage that is held in "Anchorage" each "February".

The best time to see the northern lights, or “aurora borealis” is during a cold, clear winter night. Many of the area hotels have a “northern lights wake up call” and if you indicate that you want to be awakened, they will call your room if the lights are dancing in the night sky.

Part of the beauty of "Anchorage" is its easy access to Alaska’s wilderness and the access to some of the state’s best restaurants, brewpubs and nightclubs. You can spend the day trekking through a glacial valley and be back in time for a first class meal and a night out on the town. And don’t forget Anchorage’s art scene. There’s great public art, Native art, concerts, symphony and galleries.

  4. Lived in Alaska for a little while and all of the above accounts are great (except Anchorage has a few more residents than 575...). Anchorage would give you good account of Alaska, but it's still a big city and in my opinion, not the prettiest place. If you're up for a drive Glenallen is awesome, but my choice would be Homer or Cordova. Both are within a days drive of Anchorage and are small towns that look amazing in the winter. I'd say the best months in the winter are February and March, but they're all cold and that's part of the fun!

  5. I am a professional Alaskan wildlife and nature photographer.  Do allot of aurora and ice sculpture photos.  For a winter trip I tell folks to visit Fairbanks the first two weeks of March......that time of year has been historically great for aurora watching, the International Ice Carving Championships are happening and this provides a day and a night time thing to do as the ice looks awesome with all different colored lights.  The city also hosts the NCOA sled dog races - they close down 1st ave in the center of town, dumps tons of snow on a Friday and run the races through the city all weekend for two weekend.  Sweet.

March is also kind to visitors.  Typically sunny in the day - the day/night ratio is almost normal, snow on the ground and temps between 0 and +30F in the day.  Nights can go to -35F but have been ALLOT warmer the past few years.  Last year and the year before everyone was concerned about the Ice Art melting.

You can see some of my aurora and ice art photos at www.northpolegallery.com

If you have any questions or wanting to know what to bring, ware, etc just email me.

    Hope this helps

  6. Fairbanks is the place in the winter. The Aurora overhead and big enough to have a choice of places to eat and drink. Take a trip up to the hot springs and enjoy the aurora, soak in the hot springs and know it's -30 outside.
