  1. If you don't have a neutral take the prop off or the water will go all off the place>It's 50 to 1 ratio>Make sure the tank is clean> If you put oil in the spark plug holes you will fowl the plugs>Clean the tank fill with clean fuel drain carb spray carb cleaner in carb let stand all day then turn fuel on choke start and let run at slow speed for a while>

  2. BEFORE YOU START THIS MOTOR FOR THE FIRST TIME IN TEN YEARS you need to do a few things to wake it up and get it ready - sitting idle is hard on machinery:

pull the plugs and pour a couple tablespoons of TCW3 oil into the cylinders, rotate the motor around to let it coat the cylinders & piston crowns.  Rotate the flywheel by hand a couple revolutions.

Don't worry about fouling the plugs at this stage - you need to get a good coating of oil on the internals before trying to start it.

I highly recommend you take the carb apart and soak the metal parts in carb cleaner - pre-mix will turn to varnish as it evaporates.

I highly recommend you replace the water pump impeller.  The neoprene vanes will take a "set", and won't be as effective.  It might also have started to dry rot, and pieces of it might break off and get lodged in the water jacket.

I highly recommend you change the gear oil.

Inspect the wiring, insulation gets stiff and brittle with age;  any corrosion needs to be removed, use sandpaper if necessary.

    Cold starts:

If there's a fuel shut-off valve, open it.  Engage the choke, move the throttle to the "start" position, pull the rope.  Push the choke back in soon as it catches, give it just as much throttle as it needs to keep running.  If it doesn't start on the first 3 or 4 tries, push the choke back in for subsequent attempts.

    Warm starts:

Open the throttle slightly, pull the rope.
