I've been ask to make a Czech dish, what is your favorite?

I've been invited to a potluck where each person will brink a different dish from a European country. I was asked to do the Czech Republic, as I lived there. But sadly I never cooked there :( and lived on pub food.

Can someone suggest a nice dish that I can look up a recipe for that will be suitable for a party of upscale foodie-types?

My own searches are not turning much up.

Many thanks!

  1. I am czech!! I love smazeny syr and knedliky with svickova sauce. Also ovocny knedliky are good, especially with blueberries or strawberries. There are a lot of dishes that use houby (mushrooms) too. Including soup and sauce for pasta.

  2. Knedlo vepro zelo - dumplings (potato ones), pork and sauerkraut. ! Traditional czech meal above all others. Good luck.

  3. I've always liked kolache, a type of pastry.  My mother (who was from Vienna, where the cuisine is a blend of German, Hungarian, Czech, and Jewish) used to make them with either apricot or poppy seed filling.  I found a good simple recipe here: http://www.angelfire.com/tx5/texasczech/...

  4. I second the kolache. They are not too difficult to make even if you're not a pro-baker, and they are delicious. If you need to make something savory, you can find versions with ham or cheese.

  5. pork, sauer cabbage and dumplings.

or replace the pork with fried duck or goose. /in case of poultry, use the red sauer cabbage rather than the white one /it looks better/.

off the sweet dishes, i support the kolace, too - round shaped "cakes" with the various filling - with poppy, with uqark, or with marmelade.

serve Czech beer -either Czechwar /if you're living in the US/, Budwar budweiser, or Pilsner.
