I've been asked to do a report about the Port Arthure massacre.

i must ouline why i chose to research this topic, so any good ideas that could help me explain why ?

I have read the book written by the chemist who lost his wife and 2 children on that awful day it will explain his side of events and so sad they are as well.

I have since been to Port Arthur twice and I cannot derscribe the over all sadness one feel when you first set eyes on the amazing memorial cross that has been erected.

The original shop has also been restored with a quite garden at the back for those who need to sit and reflect.

The entire entrance has been changed so badly it looks so out of place which is rather sad

I'm not sure how you can call that a masacre?  I mean, the battle took weeks and many thousands died on both sides.

EDIT:  I have no idea now what you are asking about but from the other answers, I'm assuming this question has nothing to do with the war between Russia and Japan that so humiliated Russia?

I assume you're asking why it is a topic worthy of research, rather than why you chose it as a topic, as only you can answer the latter question.

I can think of two important outcomes of the tragedy of Port Arthur. Firstly, they were the catalyst for uniform national gun laws (albeit after a great deal of political resistance - much of it ironically from Tasmania). My understanding is that Martin Bryant legally obtained the firearm he used, despite his intellectual disability.

The second is that Port Arthur itself will now forever be associated with the tragedy. This may have the effect of overshadowing its broader cultural history. It also fostered the realisation that tragedy can strike in the most idyllic of locations.
