Question:

I've been asked to join my local Community Council - what to expect?

My local counciller has asked me to put myself forward for the local community council. I really fancy it but I have images of all these retired busy bodies moaning about trivial things!

Is 24 to young?

Anyone with any experience of community councils?

  1. Just think of all those tea and biscuit functions,oh and the odd coffee morning "heaven" no I think this person has got something against you.   24 R.I.P

  2. I am guessing that the CC would be a registered charity and as such you would be a charity trustee. Its therefore important that you understand your responsibilities - make sure they give you a thorough induction and that you understand the finances as you will be responsible.

24 is not too young and the voluntary sector in general lacks young trustees, so thats a positive.

If you find the committee meetings are discussing trivia, they are not operating correctly - the role of a trustee board is to set the strategic direction of the organisation, not to decide on the colour of the reception area! If they operate on that level, you need to shake them up a bit!

You do not, as previous answerer has said, get to decide on the council tax!

My only direct contact with a CC was as a Lottery assessor when one CC I came across seemed to be trying to buy a building simply because the district council was trying to get rid of it!

  3. go for it please ,and get rid of council tax while your there good luck
