Plz dont say anything bad to me cuz I know I;ve made a huge mistake...I just had some rubbish in my brain at the time when I was doiing it...I was found in Winners and they also retained some loblaws merchandise from me. They were totalled about $300.

I got a ticket and have to do my mug shot and make a court appearance.

What do you think I might get punished for?

this is my first offence .

Thank you for your time and I'm really wexed out and dont know what to do. I will be contacting a lawyer soon but I would also like to know from some other professional people.

  1. "What do you think I might get punished for?"

    Theft comes to mind...

  2. The possible penalties, in Canada (particularly in Ottawa, where I live) can range dramatically (in a good way). Since you are a first time offender, you have a number of "better outcomes" which might exist if the other circumstances are in your favour (cooperation, items stolen, your age etc.) This is why it is important for you to get legal representation because you might otherwise get a criminal record. I personally represent people as a Criminal Law Paralegal and have numerous shoplifting clients. Some of the more common outcomes I get for first time offenders include:

    - No criminal record as long as a charitable donation is made

    - No criminal record as long as community service hours are done (sometimes a theft counselling course)

    - An "Absolute Discharge" = plea of guilty but no criminal record of conviction

    - A Conditional Discharge = a plea of guilty with no criminal record (a record may show at the US border however may not necessarily affect your ability to travel.

The bottom line is that options exist for you and you shouldn't worry. Let the pros take care of it and look out for you.
