I heard you can get synthetic dreads sewn in your hair instead of going for the all out regular dreads. I wanted to see if there is such a thing, so i can try them out before i make the commitment. I do happen to be white, and im not sure if my hair texture makes a difference in this? Please help.

  1. NO!!! DONT GET THEM!!!!

  2. Yes! You can definitely get synthetic dreads, though you might have to do a little searching to find 'em. I'm sure you can find the closest salon that's able to do that with a basic google search (though, depending on where you live, this might not be super near you). Hair texture shouldn't make any significant difference as far as synthetic dreads, though I promise it will impact the time it takes and difficulty of actually dreading your hair if and when you decide to do so.

I feel like I should mention that you should be prepared to face a certain amount of criticism from people with "real" dreads. I hate to say that because I do have real dreadlocks and I'm not someone to criticize that decision... but I think sometimes synthetic dreads are seen as a trivial fashion statement, and many people that have dreads have them for very personal, political, or spiritual reasons and have spent hours and days and months and years growing them. As you said, it's a commitment, and people get wrapped up in generalizations and such (not defending it at all... just feel like it's a good heads up).

But I'd say synthetic dreads are probably a great way to test the waters, so to speak... and if/when you decide to go all the way, check out DreadHeadHQ.com. That website totally saved me when I started mine a couple years back, and it's amazingly informative. They might even have a section about synth ones?

    Good luck, whatever your decision!
