Golfed in high school (for a very bad team) so my scores weren't that great. But I'm ok at golf. I dont try to shape shots at all (fade or draw). As it is now, i think I have something around a 20handicap. I feel that a new set of clubs can help my game (for a pt. of reference I hit my 5-iron about 180-210) . I dont ever hit my 3 or 4 for a lack of consistency with them. My question is should i go with super game improving irons or just game improving irons. As it is now i dont carry any hybrids (maybe I should start but I just feel wrong with em)..... I've been thinking about the Callaway X20's..... any advice??

  1. I have a set of X-20's that I love.

With the distance you can hit the ball, perhaps you should consider the X-20 Tour (as long as money is not an issue).

If you are also looking at woods, then try the X-Series Woods.

And there is nothing wrong with hybrids; almost every player carries one nowadays.  And 65% of tour players carry one and 80% on the Champions Tour.

Good luck, and I hope this helps.

  2. First of all, you don't hit a 5 iron farther than the pros. Let's get things in the right perspective.. There is no set of irons which is game- improving. That can only come with an improved swing, understanding that swing so you can self correct and much practice. Once you have developed the swing which suits you rythym, you will find you are hitting more consistent shots with every club. First rule : Don't over swing !! Practice hitting that ball on the center of the club face. Center hits go straighter and farther.

  3. Googie makes a lot of good points to which I am going to add to.

Learning the proper swing is the only way to improve your game.  To learn the proper swing, visit a PGA professional in your area and take lessons.

Clubs do make a difference.  A PGA Pro can assist you in choosing the right club for your game.  He or she can custom fit the clubs to match your physical build.  You will then have a set of clubs that are the correct length, lie and loft for you.  Custom fit clubs do not cost more than off the rack clubs.

To find a PGA Professional in your area, log on to pga.com and follow the instructions.

  4. googie.. u da man! (210yds. 5 iron  ...lol )

  5. Distance is measured by how far you hit it in the air.  So are you hitting a 5 iron on a par 3 that is 210 yards?  As far as clubs, this question is asked so often that it becomes redundant.  There are so many to choose from so try them all out.  I don't like the appearance of any Callaway iron other than the X-Tour.  I'm not saying they're not good clubs, but I don't care for the irons.  By your own admission, you're not a low handicap player, so it would not be a choice for you(the X-Tour).  Ping makes excellent equipment as well as Nike, Cobra, TaylorMade, and others.  So go to your local golf shop and try out all these brands.  Since you have the Golf Digest Magazine, try out the brands they suggested.  I prefer Nike, but I have hit other equipment(Ping, Mizuno, and TaylorMade).  You won't go wrong with any of the choices mentioned.
