I have been studying Shotokan for a couple of years, enjoy it, but the recurring knee problems is making me rethink my training. Any suggestions? Are there other martial arts that are "knee-friendly" but still effective for self-defense?

  1. ive been doing martial arts for a couple years and i sprained my ankle once but wanted to keep going so he let me just do the activities that dont involve much movement of my ankle(which wasnt much btw)

  2. Thai-chi

The exercises can be done at a slow pace, reducing strain and joint impact.  But the forms practiced are very effective as self-defense when performed at combat speed.

  3. Not sure what your knee problem is, specifically...knowing that would help.

Have you tried anything yourself yet?

I use a neoprene knee brace which helps stabilize my previously injured knee.  It works wonders for me - also, warming up a little more and taking an ibuprofen before class can minimize swelling and discomfort when you are exerting yourself.  (Check with your doctor before you decide whether to take ibuprofen regularly.)

Strengthening the muscles around the knee can help a lot  - cycling is great for leg strength, 0 impact, plus you get a cardio workout.

You could also take up boxing while your knee heals completely - perhaps eliminating the kicks, jumps, etc. would be enough.  Stay away from jumprope and jogging if you join a boxing gym - both are tough on knees.

Not sure if any of those fit the bill, but good luck.  I hope you find a way to continue with Shotokan.

  4. i have Osgood-Schlatter disease on both of my knees and i still do Martial arts and other sports

i think if you like Martial arts you should do it but if your knee starts to hurt just relax  until it stops
