I've been hearing a lot of bad news from the Philippines about poverty - is it really that bad?

I need realistic answers from folks living in the Philippines. What is the average daily wage of an employee there? Is it enough to support a family? How do people manage to keep their head above water? Is it still doable to retire there if I'm receiving my retirement money in dollars & spending it there? Please - answer only if you're from the Philippines.

  1. I do not only live in the Philippines, I consider myself as ethnic Filipino. The problem is that we have a fake "Democratic" form of Government. What we have is an Oligarchy form of government. What is the definition of Oligarchy?  Oligarch is defined as Oligarchy (Greek Ὀλιγαρχία, Oligarkhía) is a form of government where political power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society (whether distinguished by wealth, family, military powers or spiritual hegemony).

OUr governemt is so corrupt. Worse, the country is ruled by the ethnic Chinese. They do not mind stealing our nations treasury. They own major business, the own the Media, and also, as I have said, the rule of the government. So, what has the ethnic Filipino has? Poverty!

  2. You will be shocked on your first trip there to Philippines,as i was. The poverty area you know here in states would be a very very welcome change to someone living in a squatter area in Phils!!! Think of a nice walk in closet here in a home in the states, that's about the size a family of 4 or more has to live in there in most low income places in Phils!! You will be sitting in taxi at stoplight, and little kids in raggedy clothes will tap on window and put their hands to their mouths indicating they are hungry:-( Beggars are everywhere on the streets,as you walk they will tap you on your arms or your elbows for alms.I was in Phils for 3 weeks on my 1st trip, and i had happy and sad times there. But on my plane ride back to states,I cried uncontrollable tears.Because i met a lot of good and happy filipinos there, and they cannot help that they were born in that situation. And here i was heading back to the most wealthy and powerful nation on the planet, and i thought that I just so HAPPENED to be born here but I'm no better then anyone else on this planet. There, by the grace of god, goes I.

  3. To be honest you're not going to get a lot of good answers from people in the Philippines. I mean there's still different classes there. There are rich people in the Philippines living comfortable lives in really nice houses, condominiums. Then of course there are people living in boxes. I can't answer all your questions because it's hard finding some of those answers but I can tell you that your retirement money is still worth more than 40x in dollars since the rate exchange is around P43.00 right now.
