I want to get into a career in pastry and culinary arts. I was wondering if there is any type of scholarship even though I've been homeschooled pretty much my whole life and now I'm getting my GED. Is it hopeless?

  1. After going through the whole college-application process a few years ago I learned the best thing you can do is ask questions.  For every school you plan on applying to, either meet with or call their financial aid office to see what is available to you.  That is what it's there for, to help you figure out the tangled mess known as 'financial aid.'  Also, don't forget to fill out a FASFA form for grants.  Nothing better than free money, no?  I'm not sure how much stock a culinary arts school will put into your ACT/SAT scores, (I'm thinking not much) but it never hurts to have a good score.  I didn't get a great score, but I still received two scholarships from it.  These scholarships pay half my tuition every semester.  Plus the grant money I get just because.

  2. Most college scholarships are open to homeschoolers.

If you have been homeschooled, why are you getting a GED? Your education (assuming you completed enough high school courses) is just as valid as a Bricks and Mortar education.

Most scholarship opportunities and colleges (including top ones) recognize homeschool diplomas.

So - not hopeless.  Graduate rather than get a GED.

A GED can have a negative connotation (e.g. dropout).

If you have homeschooled then you are not a dropout.  If you need to complete a few classes then do so.

  3. If you haven't already, do some documentation of what you've done/learned--gather material showing off your skills. Most colleges accept--and some even prefer--homeschoolers. Just show them that you are worthy of their scholarship.

  4. I think if Culinary school is your goal, then they would be pleased to get a well-rounded student at their school.  I suggest that you research the schools you want to attend and see what their requirements are for scholarships.  I doubt that they are going to be based ONLY on academics.

    Good luck!
