I need to put it down in a good way so as not to make me sound like a freeloading bum who's done sod all for a year!

  1. Didn't you work at all during that time? Just write about that. if not write about your adventures. I left the UK at 26 and am still away at 36 so I guess I'll have more of a problem than you. lolol x Goodluck.

  2. went out to buy some bread and got lost for a year

  3. Well if you had been in college or in a job before you went traveling for a year then it's quite easy to make it sound good on your C.V, and even more so in an interview. Be honest about it. Say that you have always wanted to travel, and you thought it best to do so before you settled into a career. Describe some of the places you have been to, and what you gained from your experiences there - ie. how you have developed as a person. For example, by spending a year traveling you might have gained independence, become more responsible, had practice in meeting new people, learning how to communicate with them, and gaining an understanding and respect for all kinds of cultures. This will all stand to you, its called life experience and some people could go straight from school to college to a career without gaining much of it!

  4. I think it is always an advantage if you have been travelling and exploring other cultures. It broadens your horizons and helps you decide what you want to get out of life and which direction you'd like to progress in.

I don't think you need to make a particularly great effort to disguise your time abroad. It's a good thing in my view - it's not like you didn't have to work in order to maintain yourself...! So employers will/should give you credit for just that.

Otherwise, the best way to go would be to say that you wanted to gain some perspective on your life to establish where your interests and passions lie - so that you "won't be hopping from job to job because you haven't got a clue what you want to do with yourself".

    All the best, mate!

  5. perhaps if you applied for a traveling sales rep position, it could be a huge, huge plus. and it should read something like this: traveling man with a full year of experience under his belt (or in his backpack, or under his hat). And after working for a year or so in traveling sales, you could transfer to another department, possibly personnel, where you could help others with their cvs by showing them how to make the most of their experiences, whatever those may be.
