I've accepted to college about 4 months ago, but i have one issue with financial aid

Due to the fact my mother was on NY state assistance they want a letter of what cash amount my mother recieved in 2007

i figure this would be simple...but the system here is horrible i even have the assistant director of financial aid trying to help out. HRA keeps telling us that they dont do things like that. i've been really annoyed on how they cant type up a simple letter stating what my mother recieved. My Question is classes start September 3rd should i give it up and join the workforce or hang in there and fight and if so who could i complain to, to make things happen?

  1. just hang in there i know it is frustrating trust me i've been therre but getting an education is important- don't let one minor setback deter you

  2. Your mother should be able to go and get a printout of the amount of state assistance she received at any time by visiting her DHS office and visiting with her worker.  Make sure she arrives very early in the morning and has her ID with her.  If you try to request this information, you won't get anywhere.  Mom needs to do it and make it a point not to leave the DHS office until she gets what she needs.

Often times DHS workers are reluctant to give info because they are unsure what EXACTLY the person needs and what its for.  Make sure your mom knows so she can explain.  If you have to... go with her.  She needs to say, "I need a printout of how much TANF benefits I recieved in 2007" or "I need a printout of how much x*x I recieved in 2007" or whatever public assistance (cash) she got in 2007.

If this doesn't work, maybe you should take a different approach.

Does your mother know how much she receives each month?  If she does, how does she know how much she receives and when she receives it?  ASK HER!!!  What does she to do confirm she received it?  Does she get it transferred into her bank account?  Does she get a paper check?  There HAS to be a paper trail somewhere.  If she has to go to her bank and request bank statements for every month in 2007 then that might be a better option and if that is how shes getting the money, that would give you EXACTLY how much she received in 2007.
