Question:

I've damaged my eye- can anyone help?

This is my second day of a one-week trial of contact lenses, and I've never had them before so it's all new to me. Last night, I took the right one out and put it in the case, and then the left one, but I couldn't see it in the case afterwards so I tried to take it out again. I pinched like how the optician showed me to, and felt something between my fingertips (and also in my eye) pinch together and move, but it was really painful and the vision in that eye went dark, so I didn't do anything else. Then I noticed the lens was in the case after all, and that I just couldn't see it the first time. But now my eye really stings and I can hardly see out of it, though it might be just fuzzy from taking the contact lens out, I don't know! The optician's is shut right now as well as the doctors, so what should I do? Have I screwed my eyesight up?

  1. hopefully not if is no better tommorow get an emergency appointement with you're doctor or get to a and e hospital right away

  2. Hopefully you have just given yourself a corneal abrasion and not done anything more serious. Until you can see an optometrist or physician take ibuprofen for pain and DO NOT try to wear your contacts, you may need antibiotics so it is important to see your optometrist or a physician.

  3. I of course agree with the opticians.  In the future, it is a good idea when taking out your contacts to first slide them to the side of your eye (the white part, or sclera).  That way if you do end up pinching or scratching your eye, it will be on the side and not on your cornea.  If your optometrist/optician didn't show you how to do this, I would ask him or her to go over it with you.  Good luck to you and I hope everything turns out well!

  4. ...Probably.

  5. Hi there, I am also an Optician, first and foremost if you have burning and stinging along with not being able to see well, you need to see an eye doctor asap. It is probably nothing too serious, possibly a scratch. Get it checked as soon your eye doctor is in tomorrow, and by all means don't try to wear the contacts until you have had your eyes checked. Your eyesight will be fine, it is amazing how quickly the cornea can heal, especially the top layer, the epithelium. Hope you feel better soon.
