  1. we found it easier to install a trim board just like the corner board and run the siding to the trim board......looks nice and makes the job cleaner and faster......u can use a metal template scribe......

    lic. gen. contractor

  2. If it horizontal siding say 8" tall, temporarily tack it up tight to the stone, now set your scribes the same distance as the longest void you must cover. Hold your pencil scribes horizontal and move them up and down to form your scribe lines, but with a scrolling jig saw or a hand coping saw.

If you are installing 4' x8' panels, temporarily tack the sheet in place, Again-set your pencil scribes for the same distance as the largest gap, mark sheet and cut with scrolling jig saw.

If your wall requires several sheets of paneling or siding make sure to start with the scribed pc agains the stone chimney and work your way away from it. Otherwise you will have to scribe to the chimney and also have to fit it to the factory joint of the last panel you put up.

  3. You didn't say what kind of siding your using,  but the best way to scribe is with a compass and a jig saw if it is wood siding

  4. The general contour gage would be nice but if you can't find one and you are ready to proceed with your project use a common foot ruler. Have someone hold the siding up in place and level butt it up to the chimney take the ruler on edge and measure to the farthest point from the end of the siding to the stone say its 2" then start at the top of the siding and butt the ruler to the stone hold your pencil on the 2" mark on the ruler and trace down. Just follow the stone with the end of the ruler and keep the pencil on the 2" mark on the ruler. When you get to the bottom use what ever you need to cut along the pencil mark. You didn't say what kind of siding it was so what ever you need to scroll along the irregular shape will do.

  5. I can't for the life of me think of it's name..but they sell a tool that is a piece of wood with many little steel wires sticking through it...they slide back and forth simply putting pressure on it against the irregular surface you want to cut around..You simply take it and put on the stone you want to trim materials to fit..depress it against the stone and the wire rods automatically slide in the wooden handle and what is left exposed  will be the PERFECT  curve you need..you then lay the pattern on your wood or siding and trace the fit then cut out with a jig saw..

  6. A material can be scribed to fit against any irregular surface using a compass (using a ruler, as noted elsewhere, can work in a pinch but is not as easy to use or as accurate as a compass.)

The concept is simple. Butt the siding up to the stone. Find the largest gap between the two and set your compass for this distance or a tad greater. Now run the compass down the siding so that the point follows the irregular contours of the stone and the pencil traces that contour on the siding. Then use a jigsaw to cut along the traced line. Here's what it looks like:

Scribing is a very handy skill to have, and once you get the hang of it you'll find all sorts of other applications.
