however, somehow my program of study got switched around from Computer Programming to Computer Networking. it's the first week of school and i'm tempted to correct the mistake but i got to thinking and Networking seems like a much more practical degree. which would benefit me greater in the Navy, a degree in Computer Programming or Computer Networking?

  1. either one will work, assuming you actually otherwise qualify for a Commissioning.

but the Navy does almost ZERO programming.. that's all civilian contractors.

but networking..lets just say they recently created a whole new officer community( and an enlisted rating) all about Networks and Network security.

  2. Actually I think networking will give you more flexibility.  Not every base needs a coder, but all the bases need a network guy.

OK:  programmers joke:  there are 10 kinds of people in the world:  people who can code, and people who can't

Good luck!  Hope you come to San Diego :-)

  3. Most any B.S. degree will work fine.

Most of the officers that I have worked with had B.S. degrees or higher. Generally they were: Physics, Astro-physics, Nuclear-physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Accounting, and Law,

I have known many enlisted men who held degrees in geeking, though I have never known an officer who held a geek degree.

Code hacking and network tweaking are both enlisted jobs in the Navy.

Keep in mind that enlistedmen go back to school every re-enlistment to get another NEC. Sometimes we get sent to a school to pick-up additional NECs in mid-enlistment too.

I hold one NEC for code hacking, 2 NECs for Computer Systems Analysis. and 1 NEC for component repair. [As well as Intell and Law Enforcement].

    good luck

  4. you will do fine with both, but have you also thought about joining a rotc, they help with school and you will go in as a higher rank.

  5. Either one will serve you well. I would go with a computer Science degree.

  6. A degree.

It doesn't matter what you get your BA/BS in, as long as you just have a four-year degree. However, correct the d**n mistake...that's NOT what you picked for your major!!
