I've figured out what I want to do with my life, but... will it work?

Hey, I'm fifteen, and I've been trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up since I was... oh five maybe. I've gone from Ice skater to dancer to musical theater performer and now I have this. I'm sure it's what I want to do with the rest of life. I want to be a Naturopathic adolescent and child psychologist dealing in behavioral health and learning disorders. I don't know yet if I'll ad on art and music therapy. I will be focusing on trying to heal with alternative medicines, instead of referring to psychiatrists and chemicals and unnatural medicines with strange side-effects. I'll be doing things like rei-ki (sp?) and acupuncture, and lott of other eastern healing techniques along with standard talk and play therapy with families and just teens and children.

My problem is, in the place that I live, if I open up this practice I'll be drowned in holy water and considered a witch or voodoo person. There is absolutely no acceptance of that kind of healing around here. (small town hicks) I want to know if you think it would work. Where would it work? I know it might work in the big cities, but I'd like to stay closer to my home in mid america, but any thing goes right now I'm only a sophomore!

Thanks for your help,

silent

  1. Heh, I actually know of people in locations like what you're describing who were arrested at gun point for doing tai chi because the locals thought it was witch craft.  There's not much you can do to change how they'll think, so it's best to just move somewhere else.

I'd also add that reiki is not the greatest modality for fixing the psychological problems people have, but if you are ever interested in learning the Chinese approach, I could give you information on where to study that (ie. I have a friend who is a highschool teacher and she has her students do a chi gung form known as god's playing in the clouds every day, and she often can make special ed kids who normally are incapable of functioning in class be good students....and at this point is starting to gain notoriety at the school for the success she's had from bringing it into the classroom; at the very least it's better than Ritalin!).

IF you want to practice naturopathy, you really can only do it in states which licence it (those being the following Alaska, Arizona, California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Idaho Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Washington, US Territories: Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands).  Doing it in unlicenced places is a bit trickier.  There are 6 naturopathic colleges, and they require BAs to be accepted into them (although fortunately at this time they are not that hard to get into, unlike med schoo).  I know that SFSU is considered to be one of the best feeder schools (as they have a holistic health program there), so you might want to consider going there to be put on your path to becoming an ND.

  2. So you can be judgemental of them calling them small town hicks but they can't dare judge you.

Stop being so full of yourself if you want to really help others in the future. Btw-the big cities will cut you down to size pretty fast.

  3. People are stupid.  Willing to buy anything.  If it will work or not all depends on how good of a salesman you are.

  4. Why wait?  There are free lessons of how to do EFT online, as well as free instructions to download.  It is being used for ALL kinds of problems.

In your situation, you ought to feel people out before introducing the concept.  There are experiences on EFT websites of 'veteran' EFTers, & how they've learned to deal with skeptics.

  5. I really understand about small towns.  They can suprise you though.  I think if you open your practice in your hometown, you'll want to mix the standard with the alternative.  My son's doctor does that.  She is the most popular doctor in our little town.

If you can avoid any extremes in your practice, you should be good to go.  That generally goes well with life in general.  If you are all "voodoo" doctor or just your everyday practitioner.

Each patient has their own special needs.  Some respond well to medication and some don't.

I think you may be able to really help children.  You will need to jump through some hoops to be able to do it though.  Good luck!

  6. Go for it.

  7. I didn't know what I wanted at your age. Now I'm in late thirties, I still don't know what to do when I grow up.

The simple answer is - do what you would feel happy doing.

I am having a career change soon. I've been an aircraft engineer for 16 years, and I will be doing a reiki course soon, but also want to do environmental studies too.

Could you move to a town not far from you if you weren't accepted in your place? From a business point of view if you try alternative healing in a place where it is not accepted, then you won't get much money anyway so that seems pointless.

You could do your pshychology/behaviour stuff as your main thing as it is more accepted (and may I say probably better paid). The alternative therapies can be learned later on, at weekends or part time classes whilst you have a job.

Just one suggestion, but the possibilities for you are endless.
