  1. Well, you are S. African citizen; therefore, you have to find out if you need a visa to U.K. You can do it either through your own embassy or U.K embassy. Being on a layover means you have a so-called transit visa which does not let you leave the airport. The US green card has nothing to do with anything, it can only help you a little to ease the process of getting a visa to any country.

    Been there, done that.
