Question:

I've got a black belt test in an hour..?

Hey I'm 14 and first degree black belt.. I'm gonna be second black belt in an hour.......

I'm one of the better students in my school but I'm not confident in some aspects of the test.

I've been told by my brother that I'm a real bad sparrer. He says I can only do roundhouse kicks and stuff. I don't want to try new kicks and look like an idiot when I fail.

I'm also not too confident about the poomsaes. I could do them easily right now, but for some reason I don't work well under pressure.

I can't kick very high with my left leg, and my right leg is a bit swollen right now so I might have trouble with that too.... the only thing that I'm confident about is my "kiyap"

What are some things I should look out for? Any advice or encouragement? Thanks.

  1. First, remember how you did on your first test ?,  and somehow you made it.    The second test is no different.  Stop putting seeds of doubts in your mind.

Do your test as if you're just coming to a regular class , except with more fiery attitude.  Pretend today is the last day and the last time  that you will be training in TKD.

Today would not be wise to try out new technique, do techniques that you can be comfortable with with.

When you do your poomsae, pretend no one is watching and you are all alone in the dojahng.  Stop thinking what others are thinking.  Do your form like its no ones business.

Can't kick high ? So what !   Kick middle and Kick strong !  Always aim for the stomach or chest area.  Forget the head ! Fight like there's no tomorrow and FEAR shall be nothing to you but a fallen adversary !

YOU are the ONLY person on this earth who can use YOUR ability !

Good Luck and Wishing you the Best !

  2. You are a black belt, don't be so down on yourself.

So what if you can't kick high.  Low kicks are quicker, stronger, and are just as, if not more, effective.  Why would you want to kick someone in the head?  Kick someone in the thigh and they will drop with minimal damage.

One thing my Sensei had us do once was pick a deck of Kata cards (they each had a move on them) and with a partner, we had to simulate a fight, memorize it, then switch partners who had other cards.

Change the routine around a bit, improvise, do things at different speeds, bag work, get creative.  You'll be fine.
