As well as the top tourist spots, advice on any more unusual or unknown places, such as your favourite cafe, would be interesting. Thanks!

  1. My favorite hangout is Aux Trois Mailletz at 56 rue Galande in the 5th arrondissement.

Its a friendly place with a mix of tourists and locals. There's a piano on the ground floor and various singers. There's a nightclub in the basement which has a 1950's Stork Club sort of ambiance.

You might also try Le Mazet at 61, rue Saint-Andre-des-Arts. its where Jim Morrison had his last drink. its gotten tarted up since those days but its still a sort of historic spot. If you go there, check out the Coeur de Commerce right next to it. Marat, the revolutionary leader used to have his offices there.

Around the corner at 13, Rue Ancienne Comédie

is the Cafe Procope where Ben Franklin used to hang out and where such French luminaries as Danton, Marat, Votaire and Moliere used to congregate. its been in continuous operation in the same location since 1686.

  2. for places to go

i'd suggest a neighborhood called butte aux cailles which is like a little village, very nice, has a very local feel

also check out il st louis island where you find the berthillon ice cream

and place des vosges - nice hisotrical park

  3. in the 19th addorisment there is a really cool park that was made from an old garbage dump ( note it does not smell and you cannot tell that now). it is called buttes chamount. the park offers a great view of the sacre coure (my favorite place in paris) from a look out place you take steps to. the park also features a cave. i used to live near there while i was studying abroad the view was spectacular. also try flems it is restaraunt.
