  1. 1. plug your microphone to the microphone socket, go to control panel, Sound and Audio Devices Properties, to enable/select microphone, make sure the slider is 3/4 up in output volume

    2. if you haven't install audacity, double click the installation file, follow the on-screen instruction and install it, after installation go to ctrl+p to go to preference, audio i/o tab, the device: boxes for both playback and recording is your sound card name, e.g. something like "Realtek High Definition Device", click ok, close audacity, restart audacity, check the bottom 2 boxes too if you expect to record voice while playing a song.

    3. open audacity, on the top right corner there should be a dropdown box, if you do the above 2 steps correctly, there should be an option for microphone, choose that

    4. ctrl+N to open a new file for recording, click the record button(or hit r) to start recording, s to stop, p to pause, l for playback.

    5. for saving the finished clip, go to menu, file, go to one of the export line, to export the recording as one of these file format.

    Hope this helps.
